Are there risks to dying your hair while pregnant?

Q: I am 22 weeks pregnant and held off on getting my hair dyed during the first trimester. Are there any proven facts that hair dye is detrimental to the fetus if applied in the second or third trimester at a hair salon?

A: Hair dye is safe during all three trimesters of pregnancy. There are no associations with birth defects or other adverse effects on the pregnancy.

The ingredients in the dye do not get absorbed into the bloodstream to any degree. You should be concerned only if you have open lesions on your scalp, like psoriasis, for example, as this may change things. In this case, avoid any topical products that may be absorbed through the lesions.

Most topical products are safe to use during all three trimesters of pregnancy.
