Over the years I have heard from a number of people that you should never refrigerate peanut butter. The story goes that placing peanut butter in the fridge causes a bacteria to develop which can cause food poisoning. I was curious as to whether or not this story held any merit, so I reached out to a medical expert on JustAnswer.
Dr. Phil, a Medical Expert on JustAnswer, says that is peanut butter myth is false. In fact, all bacteria grow slower at colder temperatures so this doesn’t make sense scientifically. He recommends just following the expiration date regardless of whether you store your peanut butter in or out of the fridge.
Additionally, the National Peanut Board echos Dr. Phil’s findings saying while it is not necessary to refrigerate an opened jar of commercial manufactured peanut butter doing so will not cause any harm.
So we can mark this myth as FALSE
